Accompanying a photo of an injured, exhausted sailor in a poster for the Volvo Ocean Race were the words “If Your Dream Doesn’t Scare You It Isn’t Big Enough.”
And as I stood watching the 7 sailing teams depart on a 9 month race around the world, I tried to remember the last time I felt truly alive but scared at the same time. It was, quite possibly, on a road trip through Colombia when stopped by gun toting rebels. And that was many years ago.
So I decided I needed a Project X; a hugely fun, demanding and frankly stupid project of an adventure. One that meant getting expedition fit, putting a team together, working out how to finance it, plan it and of course to actually do it.
Researching the practicality of driving overland from London to New York, I decided to see Project X as the culmination of a series of challenges and adventures taking place over several years.
24,902. This is the circumference, in miles, of our planet. It also seems a great target for the total distance of my challenges to exceed. More importantly, this number also comprises the amount I intend to raise in pounds for The Stroke Association.
